my littlest sister swallowed her gum

and i wanted to cry

i wanted to hug her until

we both felt our

heartbeats collide

we beat as one

and i’d like to say

i’m not sure why it took

her swallowing her gum

to trigger the tectonic plates

above my core to overlap

and create an earthquake

but i know why

inside i’ve always known why

it takes the abysmal

the cherrios in your bowl

with a drizzle of strawberry syrup

the “i just learned a new dance

and i really want to show you

so put down your phone and

please don’t blink”

the oversized sweater i passed

down to you that fits you

better than it fit me

i would rather bare my bones

out on the train tracks

and peel back my skin

than show you how much

your crooked teeth

and your freckles

color me softly

i’d rather rip out my heart

and bury it deep

than show you how fondly

it beats when you’re near me

when you call out my name

and laugh the same as me

please know that my loyalty

is stronger than mamae’s

to her rum and coke

stronger than aba’s

finger tapping to match tempo

no one can tend my gardens

and let them die like you do

i’d let them die for you

i’ll grab your hands and

show you how to replant

the seeds and when

we both fail and we both die

we can watch our harvest grow

all i have ever wanted in this

endless existence is
